The evidence

We don't promise better than reality. The research says XR training is as good as conventional training — and safer, cheaper and repeatable where live training can't happen. Here's every source on this site, with its caveat.

THE PROBLEM

Allies plan $40bn+ in counter-drone capability over five years; Bulgaria has committed €80M to NATO's Drone Edge initiative.

New systems need trained crews, and the sim content follows the hardware.

NATO, 7 Jul 2026BTA, 14 Oct 2026

NATO Allies aim to train five times more drone operators by the end of 2027.

NATO, 7 Jul 2026

WHAT IT IS

Across 12 studies and 176 effect sizes, training in XR was as effective as conventional training.

Equivalent, not superior. Its value is where live training is dangerous, costly or impossible.

Kaplan et al., Human Factors, 2021

CRAWL

The US Army's Crawl-Walk-Run methodology sequences training from relatively simple tasks to increasingly complex ones.

Firstlight follows the method; it doesn't replace live training.

US Army Training Fact Sheet, 23 Feb 2023

WALK

Intelligent tutoring systems lift results by about 0.66 SD — from the 50th to the 75th percentile.

AI role-players in military training are promising but not yet peer-reviewed; NATO ACT is testing LLMs in wargaming. We run them as pilots.

Kulik & Fletcher, Review of Educational Research, 2016NATO ACT, 16 Apr 2025

RUN

Police officers (n = 237) showed the same heart rate and perceived stress in VR as in live scenario training.

Kleygrewe et al., Police Practice and Research, 2024

DEBRIEF

DARPA's Digital Tutor: after 16 weeks, trainees solved 74% of the troubleshooting problems they attempted; experienced Fleet technicians solved 52%.

Very small samples; not peer-reviewed.

Fletcher & Morrison, IDA Document D-5358, 2014

UNDER STRESS

VR biofeedback breathing training, developed with the Australian Defence Force, lowered breathing rate and increased everyday use of breath control after three sessions.

Pilot study without a control group.

Kluge et al., PLoS ONE, 2021

VR exposure therapy reduced PTSD symptoms versus waitlist (g = 0.62).

No significant advantage over standard exposure therapy — VR is a clinician's tool, never a replacement.

Kothgassner et al., European Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2019

READY

British Army RAPSTONE already requires at least 15 simulator hours before a live drone flight.

Simulation before live is becoming the rule, not the extra.

Halldale, 28 Oct 2025

OTHER CREWS

Randomised trial: trauma resuscitation trained in VR alone scored the same as manikin training (163.1 vs 163.2).

Single centre, 38 participants.

Lange et al., Military Medicine, 2025

Bulgaria, 2025: 20.5% of military posts unfilled; voluntary reserve at 558 against a target of 3,000.

Ministry report as covered by BTA.

BTA, 4 Apr 2026

What we won't claim

  • That VR beats live training. The evidence says equivalent.
  • That VR therapy beats standard therapy. It doesn't; it's an alternative some patients prefer.
  • Vendor numbers as facts — e.g. '90% cheaper' TCCC figures come from vendor-authored studies.
  • Accreditations we don't hold.
  • A price before we've seen your system. We quote a fixed price after a 30-minute call.

Known limits

VR sickness: average 15.6% dropout across 55 studies — we design short, seated or walk-in-place sessions.
